Mary Todd Matern

In loving memory of Mary Todd Matern, a dedicated Registered Nurse who graced this world with her unwavering commitment and compassionate care for over 30 years. Mary's journey on this earth began on February 12, 1933, and sadly came to a peaceful close on February 19, 2024, in Billings, Montana.

Mary's legacy is one defined by resilience, dedication, and a nurturing spirit that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her. She rode the city bus to obtain her R.N. from the University of Utah. Her extraordinary career as a Registered Nurse was marked by selflessness and kindness, embodying the true essence of caregiving. one such example is on the way to Wendover, Mary made her husband pull over on the Bonneville Salt Flats to help a truck driver that had jack knived and flew through the windshield. Mary sat with the driver and held his hand until paramedics arrived.

Beyond her professional achievements, Mary was a woman of many passions and interests. She found joy in ballroom dancing, camping under the starlit sky, and casting her line while fishing in the tranquility of nature. A sports enthusiast at heart, she cheered fervently for her favorite teams - Padres baseball, Chargers football, and The Utah Jazz basketball.

Mary's proudest accomplishments were not only in her career but also in her roles as a beloved wife to Leland Matern, to whom she kept her vow of "Til death do us part." Mary and Leland hand built their home in Utah. She was a devoted mother to Barbara, Roger, Mike, and Debra. Her unwavering love and steadfast dedication to her family exemplified the depth of her character.

She now joins her father Andrew, mother Nevada, Aunt Lilly, and brothers Ralph and Ernest in eternal peace. Mary will be dearly missed by surviving family members including her daughter Barbara Henstrom; son-in-law Scott Henstrom; daughter Debra Radvic; sons Roger Matern and Mike Matern; grandson Jeremy Matern; 9 other cherished grandchildren; as well as numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mary's life will be held at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary, Cemetery and Pet Garden in Cottonwood Heights, UT. The graveside service will take place on February 28th starting at 2:00 PM. Let us come together to honor the memory of this remarkable woman whose life was an epitome of perseverance and love.

May Mary Todd Matern's soul rest in eternal peace as her memory lives on in the hearts of all who knew and cherished her profound presence.
