Saint George, Utah - William “Bill” Maurice Vandenberghe, 82, passed away peacefully at home after a valiant fight with Parkinson’s disease. He was born June 17, 1943, in Cedar City, Utah, to George M. Vandenberghe and Mary Jane Stephenson. He married Maxiene Clark on November 21, 1964, in Milford, Utah. They were later sealed together in the Salt Lake City Temple on December 6, 1965.
Bill was raised 10 miles south of Cedar City on a family farm where he raised all sorts of animals and learned how to cultivate the land. This inspired his work ethic for the remainder of his life.
Bill attended Cedar High School where he graduated in 1962. He then went on to Utah Trade and Technical School in Salt Lake City. He graduated in 1964 as a licensed barber and hairdresser.
After getting married, he and Maxiene lived in the Salt Lake area from 1964 to 1973 where he practiced his trade.
He moved his family to Saint George to start a business in 1973. They started the business, Guys & Dolls in Kemp Corner, until he sold the business around 1983. He was hired by the Washington County School District in 1983 as a custodian at Dixie Middle School and was later hired as the Head Custodian for Sunset Elementary and Snow Canyon Middle School. He valued all the friendships he created while working for the school district, and the students affectionately called him “Mr. Bill”. He worked for the district for 22 years and retired from the school district in 2005. He continued with his hair profession part time while working full time as a custodian and retired from being a barber after 60 years in 2024.
Bill had many hobbies. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and refinishing furniture. He loved spending time in the mountains with family and friends. He was often riding his ATV or horses. Bill took a special interest in cross-country endurance horse rides with his daughter Stephaine. Bill loved gardening, and he and Maxiene spent many hours tending to their flowers and vegetables.
He is survived by his dedicated wife of 61 years, Maxiene Vandenberghe, who currently resides in Saint George. His daughter Stephanie Vandenberghe, son Bryan (Kjersten) Vandenberghe. Grandchildren: Scott, Branden, Tyler, Samantha, Daxton, Brylei, Kelci, Breckyn. Great-Grandchildren: Beau, Brycen, Chip, Madison, Rory. Sisters: Madeline Shelley, Marsha Snow, Judy Jenson. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Mary, and his sisters Regina and Elizabeth.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 11, at 10:00 am at the St. James chapel, 1095 East Saint James Lane, Saint George, Utah. Friends may call for a viewing on Friday, April 10, from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Spilsbury Mortuary, and on Saturday, April 11, from 9:00-9:45 A.M, preceding the funeral services at the St. James chapel. Interment to follow at the Cedar City Cemetery.
