Steven Paul Houchens

Jun 17, 1950 Jul 11, 2023

Steven Paul Houchens passed away July 11, 2023, at 73 years old in Herriman, Utah.

Steve was born the youngest of three boys in Jackson, Wyoming, to Frederick Arthur Houchens and Ruby Viola Stoneberg. Growing up, Steve spent much of his time helping out at the family store Fred's Market, skiing, playing sports at Jackson Wilson High, traveling with his mom and driving his Barracuda.

Steve studied Accounting at the University of Utah. During the summers, he returned to Jackson to work in the store where he met a beautiful, fun dancer named Cynthia Rae Black, whom he would call his wife for over 52 years. After graduation, Steve and Cindy moved to Foster City, California, where he started his career as a CPA with John F. Forbes & Co. Steve went on to serve as an accountant at the University of Utah, an auditor for Clark County and the Deputy City Manager of Las Vegas. He was consistently considered by his colleagues to be an honest, dedicated and reliable leader. Steve also contributed to various service organizations, quietly and confidently sustaining causes he felt worthy of his time and donations.

Steve was known as a listener, supporter, music-lover and outdoor enthusiast. Steve routinely got the kids up at 4:30 am on a Saturday to head for fresh tracks on the slopes or glass water on the boat. He loved to thunder classical music through the home and shared his love for his favorite contemporary musicians. Most importantly Steve was known as a trusted confidant that would reflect deeply and empathize with the needs and concerns of his family members.

Steve spent the final 15 years of his life battling Parkinson's Disease by skiing, running, walking, listening to music and reading over 150 works of classical literature. Steve inspired many through his perseverance in the face of a difficult disease and valued the medical, church and other communities that supported him in his fight.

Steve is survived by his wife Cindy, their four children Heidi, Matt, Heather and Jesse and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 11:00 am, preceded by life celebration displays beginning at 10:00 am. Services will be at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 15003 Spring Canyon Dr. Herriman, Utah.
