Samantha "Sami" Christine Derrick

Jan 30, 1994 Jul 9, 2023

Samantha Christine Derrick, Sami, passed away on July 9, 2023, at the age of 29 in Murray, Utah. She was born on January 30, 1994, in Poway, California. Samantha is survived by her daughter, Clarice Derrick, her parents Adrian Derrick and Jennifer Derrick, her brother Ian Derrick, her grandmother Kathy Douthit, and many more loving and caring family members. She was preceded in death by her uncle, Lyndon Derrick, and her grandmother, Ellen Derrick.

Sami attended Bennion Elementary and Junior High, and Taylorsville High School and some studies at Salt Lake Community College. She had many lifelong friends that she's known since early grade school.

These are the memories of some of those friends:

She was a bright individual that loved cooking and baking. When she was about 17, she thought she would open her own Etsy page and sell cupcakes. Her cupcakes were delish! Her cooking was inspired from her time in France, where she would spend her summers, with her Grandma, as a kid . She made a mean steak and potatoes, and she wasn’t shy to try and cook something new! She loved rockclimbing and hiking. She would often spend her nights hiking up to 5th Water and sitting in the hot water while watching the stars.

Although she lost the battle to a debilitating mental illness, she was a bright and funny individual. She knew how to crack jokes even when times were tough.

She loved artwork--her own and others. She would spend hours working on a new art project.

She loved her friends, and her friends loved her. She was always invited to a party or a gathering where she was the life of the party. She made a point of making new friends feel welcome, especially those that were shy or alone. She made the world a brighter place for all those that knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

These are words from her parents:

Sami: daughter, sister, mother, niece, and friend

From a challenging birth of tearful, worried faces; she struggled and survived.

A dark-haired child with a beaming. mischievous smile; and curious eyes and heart, that developed a love of beauty and blossomed into a creative soul.

A fierce and independent child became a woman, as unique as she was conflicted. The path she chose was her own, defined and understood only by herself.

A serene, cool mountain pasture of vivid wild flowers; shaded forest paths with misted streaks of brilliant sunshine. A raging torrent and the calm of crystal clear stone dappled pools. A dark, turbulent storm with fearful intensity and the sweet stillness in the newly cleansed world.

A flame that burned hot, yet burned out much too quickly

A paradox and an inspiration

She blessed us with Clarice "Clary" Sterling Derrick, a small force of nature, brilliant as her mother. Clarice will forever invoke memories of her mother's fierce love.

Sami will be loved, cherished and forever remembered.
