Rodney Wayne Sims

Jan 18, 1947 May 11, 2025

Rodney Wayne Sims passed away Sunday, May 11, 2025, in South Jordan, Utah. He was born in Murray, Utah on January 18, 1947, to Mac and Brenna Sims. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1965 and served an LDS Mission in New York City. Upon returning from his mission, he then attended Weber State College where he met LaGene Ross at the Institute of Religion. They were married on December 13, 1968, in the Salt Lake Temple. They lived in Ogden, Holladay, West Valley City, and finally settled in South Jordan from March 1979 until the time of death. He served in numerous church callings throughout his life including Elders Quorum President, High Priest Group Leader, Ward Mission Leader and Pheasant Run Alzheimer’s Unit – which he absolutely loved.

He worked incredibly hard throughout his life due to his dad and sister being killed in a car accident when he was 8 years old. He had many different jobs including working for Geneva Rock driving a cement truck for 28 years, working for the Teamsters union as a business agent for 3 years, and driving a school bus for Jordan School District for 23 years. He loved driving the school bus and enjoyed spending time with the kids and doing field trips on the weekends. He finally retired from bus driving in June 2021. However, after mom passed away, to keep himself busy, he went to work for Budget Rental car for a little over a year until his health significantly started to decline where he could no longer work.

He was a man with so many talents. He taught his children the value of hard work, how to budget money, the importance of family, values and unconditional love. He would always have a joke that he would either greet you or leave you with. He was a friend to anyone and seemed to know everyone wherever we would go. He would always find the good in every person he met. His nicknames were Hot Rod, Spoiler, Papa Bear, and Baboo (which his loving grandkids would call him).

He is survived by his children: Rodney Wayne Sims II, Paul Uruma Judd (Jessica), Crista Sharlynn Yancey (Will), his grandchildren: Cymmone, Rodney Wayne III, Jaxon, Jaden, Jordan, and his wonderful siblings: William (Jetta), Donald (Karen), Lynette Shipp (Charles). He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years LaGene, his dad and mom Mac and Brenna and his sweet baby sister Lorraine.
