Robert Thorpe Toombs passed away peacefully on October 17, 2023.

Robert was born on January 14, 1939, in South Bend Indiana. He loved to say where he was from and would always follow it up with “Hoosiers, Hoosiers”!

He went by “Bob, Bob Toombs” and was always ready to shake your hand with his introduction as he would introduce himself to everyone he could. He made friends everywhere he went. One of his shirts that describes him the best was “It’s a Bob thing…you wouldn’t understand”.  He definitely lived up to his name!

Bob lived in Seattle and worked for Boeing when he was growing up. He served in the Army and loved to share his experiences in Germany as “The Weatherman”.  He later moved to Salt Lake City Utah and attended Westminster College and graduated with a business degree. He worked for Hercules for 13 years and then became an independent insurance agent, and he spent most of his life selling insurance and he definitely had a passion for it!

Our Dad was a gentle giant and a friend to all. He made friends wherever he went and loved to strike up conversations with strangers who generally became his well-known friends.

He was an avid tennis player, all his life until a car accident in 2014 that limited the use of his right arm. He then started playing pickleball, left-handed, and most of the time would win! He had such a passion for Pickleball and could tell you how many courts there were in the US and he would love to rattle off the rules to anyone that he could talk to about it. We know he’s playing pickleball and tennis up in heaven!

Unfortunately, he was not able to continue his love for Pickleball as his health declined rapidly due to Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s.

Robert is preceded in death by his parents Robert Cecil Toombs and Ruby Toombs, his daughter Katrina Lee Dahle and the Love of his life, Dianna Toombs.

Robert is survived by his brother, Barry Toombs, his daughters Teressa Toombs and Stephanie Toombs, Ron Dahle, Corey and Kelsie Dahle, and their three children.  Robert is also survived by Dianna’s family, whom he was extremely close with. Edie and Dennis Park, Moses and Joel Vargas, Chris and Bia Park, Joshua Park, Meagan and Conner Kay and all of their many children. Dianna’s family was a big part of his life, and we are forever grateful for the love they always showed him through the years and always accepted him with open arms throughout the years. We are so happy he is reunited with Dianna!

We are very grateful for all the services that the VA provided for him over the years and for the wonderful people at the Midvale Senior Center for all they do there for seniors as well. We are also grateful for many of his daughter Teressa’s friends who helped Bob in many capacities over the years. He was always so grateful to all of them, as well as his daughter Teressa, who has been his primary caregiver for many years. A special thanks to Emily Kocherhans for the many years she helped our dad after his accident.  Also, a special thanks to all the staff at Carrington Court Assisted Living which was his final forever home.  We are eternally grateful for everything they did for our Dad in his final years and even up to the final hours of his life!

I know he is saying “thank you” right now because he always said that for anyone that was helping him.  And of course, he would follow any goodbye up with “drive safe and be careful”.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 23, 2023, at Memorial Redwood Mortuary and Cemetery 6500 South Redwood Road, West Jordan, Utah 84123 at 3:30 PM with a viewing prior from 2:00 – 3:15 PM at the same location.
