Richard Niel Hazelgren

Mar 12, 1938 Jan 26, 2023

Salt Lake City, Utah -

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Richard Niel Hazelgren, a beloved uncle, Papa, and friend to many. He passed away on January 26, 2023. Richard was born on March 12, 1938, to John and Pearl Hazelgren, in Murray, UT, and lived a life filled with joy and love.

Richard never married, as his true love was taken from him too soon in a tragic horse-riding accident. Although he never had children of his own, he was a father figure to many throughout his life.

Richard was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he served in various capacities and touched many people's lives through his service and kindness. He was a man of strong faith and lived according to his beliefs.

Richard was an entrepreneur at heart, owning a farm in Roosevelt, Utah, and Richard's Ice Cream Parlor, a beloved local landmark. He also owned and operated a few other small businesses in West Valley and Murray. Most recently, Richard worked for Speedway, working until the very end. He was a hard-working and dedicated person, and his legacy will continue through the memories and experiences of those who knew him.

Richard loved hunting, and every year he would go mainly for the opportunity to enjoy good food and spend time in nature with friends and loved ones. His love of flowers was extraordinary. When asked, he could tell you the name of any plant which helped make the most beautiful gardens at his and his family's homes. In addition, he had a passion for taking pictures and accumulated thousands of photos that will forever preserve his memories and adventures.

Richard loved animals and had several dogs over the years, most recently Holly. She was his sidekick and was always by his side, whether at home or in the car. She loves and misses her dad.

Most of all, Richard was a kind and caring person who always put others before himself. He had a heart of gold and was always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need. His selflessness and generosity will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Richard will be greatly missed, but his memory will live on through the countless lives he touched. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and generosity that will never be forgotten.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Hazelgren, siblings Edie and Don Walters, Jay and Marge Hazelgren, and Jeane Mackie. He is survived by his nieces Angela (Lynn) Dufrenne, Sherie (Steve) Christensen, Linda (Fred) Burtoft, and nephew Brian (Ann) Hazelgren. Several great-nieces and nephews, including those closest to him, that called him Papa, Gabi and Grady. Multiple long-time friends, including Thomas and Cami Callister and family.
