Richard Jolley Hales passed away on May 8, 2022. Richard was born December 27, 1963 to Don and Patricia Hales, in Murray Utah. He was the 4th child, 2nd boy and brought an extra layer of fun to family. Richard loved basketball from a young age and could still light it up as one of the old guys. Richard graduated from Brighton High School and received his Associates Degree from SLCC. Richard loved being outside in nature, especially when he was on a motorcycle. Cottonwood Canyons was his happy place and where he felt God. He was a skilled carpenter and was able to build anything. His framing skills were used on many family homes and even most recently, he helped build a deck. When a project needed a helping hand, Richard was the one to call! Richard was kind, resilient and loyal. His eyes would twinkle and his bright smile made you an instant friend. Richard was a sweet brother, with a tender heart and genuinely cared for his family and friends. He loved a good baseball hat and wore many hats in life. Son, brother, uncle, cousin, grandson. But his favorite hat was Dad and Grandpa! Richard loved all of his 7 children and 6 grandchildren! Richard’s children, Jessica (Chris) Heliin, Richard (Ruth) Hales, Tina Marie Nguyen, Michael Nguyen, Isabella (Colton) Marin, Daniel (Matti) Hales and Cameron (Maddie) Hales. Richard’s grandchildren Enrique, Anthony, Angelo Jr, Jocelyn, Michael Jayden and Liliana.

He was proud of his kids and the lives they were living. If you had a minute he would always give you the “kid update”, they were his joy!

Richard was preceded in death by his Mom, Patricia, his older brother Greg, Step Mom, Eve, son in law Angelo Sr and mother in law Shirley Smith. He is survived by his children and grandchildren, his Dad, Don, siblings Shelli (Kip) Densley, KaRynn (Bryan) Christensen, Terri Hales, Michael Hales, Lisa (Mike) Walters, Paul (Jennie) Hales, Camille (Craig) Bergstrom, foster brother Darren (Brenda) Tafoya. And many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard had challenges in his life, as we all do at times, and our hearts ached with him during those times. We will be celebrating Richard’s life and light with a Celebration of Life Open House and Memorial this Sunday, May 15th. All friends and family are welcome!

Guestbook

I have fond memories of Richard. He was like a big brother to me and always offered words of wisdom during my high school years. I guess he wanted to keep Camille and I out of trouble and from making the same mistakes he had. He was fun, kind and always watched out for us.
