Richard Elijah Chipman

Feb 24, 1933 May 26, 2024

Our Dad, Richard Elijah Chipman, born February 24, 1933 (91), passed away peacefully on his favorite day of the week, Sunday, May 26, just as the Sunday morning hour came upon us (12:15am), surrounded by family. His life was a legacy of so many wonderful traits and memorable characteristics - Humor, laughter, joyful playfulness, selfless service, humility, and a sincere reverence and devotion to his Faith in God. Dad

was the epitome of Christlike kindness, friendliness, and charity to everyone. His life embodied love and integrity. We seldom if ever heard him utter an unkind word or criticism about anyone or any group (expect the NY Yankees). Dad was a deeply spiritual man, a gentle soul who lived an exemplary, disciplined life. His greatest love, next to his Savior Jesus Christ, was his family. The love of his life was his beloved spouse, Joanne Barbara Clynick Chipman. They were married on June 9, 1960 in the Salt Lake Temple. Their union of 64 years was blessed with 7 children, 20 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was born in American Fork, Utah, to Elijah and Alta Chipman. He was a devoted, caring son and brother to his parents and older sisters Charlotte and Jewel. He served a full-time mission to the eastern United States for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After his two year mission, he was drafted and served in the US Army during the Korean War. Dad graduated from BYU with a bachelor degree in accounting and a masters degree in accounting from the University of Utah. He was a certified public accountant and worked selflessly and joyfully to provide for his family.

He loved sports, especially baseball and basketball, golf and football. He enjoyed coaching all three of his sons in various sports, as well as serving as their scout master. His favorite sports team was BYU, followed by the Boston Red Sox, but everything BYU was #1. He also enjoyed hiking, skiing, camping and traveling with his family. Westerns and World War II movies, especially if they starred John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart, were his favorites. Each day we could always count on finding Dad reading from the newspaper and scriptures. He was meticulous in everything from mowing the lawn to loading the dishwasher. After retirement, he and our Mother served a mission together in the Salt Lake Temple Square mission. Our parents also served as temple workers at the Jordan River and Salt Lake Temples. Dad loved the temple and enjoyed serving in various callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Dad is survived by his wife Joanne, and his seven children: Debora, Catherine (Mike), Michael (Mary), Stephen (Stacey), Carol Ann, Cheree (Gerald), and Daniel. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elijah and Alta Chipman, his sisters Charlotte and Jewel, his younger infant brother, his granddaughter Elizabeth, and his grandson in-law Matt. We’d like to thank Cedarwood Memory Care and Renew Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they provided our father.

Dad, we know you are in a much happier and grander place, free from the physical pain that you have endured these past several years. We miss and love you immensely and look forward to that most beautiful day to be reunited with you!
