Ralph L Hughes, age 84, returned to his Heavenly home with his loving family by his side on Friday, November 3, 2023. Ralph was born on August 11, 1939 in Mount Pleasant, Utah to Joseph Worthen Hughes and Bertha Christina Larsen. Ralph married Vallene Moesser on August 2, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children, Kristin, Randy (JaNise), Tawny, Brandon (Jenny).
Ralph graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1957. He joined the Navy in 1958 and was a Seabee. He served in Phoenix, Guam, Okinawa, and Midway Island. He was honorably discharged after serving 4 years. While working at Hercules, he was set up on a blind date with Vallene by friends who met Ralph while cruising State Street. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 2, 2023. He worked for the telephone company for 38 years. He has always been a hard worker. As a child, they raised all of their own animals for food and had a large garden to take care of. He was also doing chores for the neighbors when they needed help. During his senior year of high school, he milked cows morning and night. He would also help the farmers in the community harvest their crops and feed their animals to earn spending money. Since most of these farmers were some of his high school teachers, he admits that is probably how he graduated from high school.
Ralph has served in many callings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He has been Elders Quorum President, Gospel Essentials teacher, Young Men’s teacher, Stake High Council, Young Single Adults, as well as a Bishopric Counselor before being called as Bishop. He loved to Index and at one point was the top Indexer in the Stake.
Family was his everything: Going camping, fishing, 4-wheeling and traveling. He loved going to baseball and softball games, school performances, ice skating performances and anything else the grandkids were involved in. He enjoyed hanging out, playing games, and spending time with them. He also enjoyed spending time with nieces, nephews, cousins and their families. He loved to go to the family home in Mount Pleasant and was there even until the weekend before he started his journey to his Heavenly home.
“Ralphie” is survived by his wife, four children and five grandchildren, Taylor, Alyssa, Connor, Kayla and Courtney. Preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Kenith, Wayne and Jolene.
Special thanks Dr. Frame for his caring treatment during his cancer battle and to the Huntsman Cancer Institute during his short stay at the hospital.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 11/10/2023 at 11:00 a.m. There will also be a 45-minute viewing before the funeral starting at 10:00 a.m. A visitation will be Thursday, 11/09/2023 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. All services will be at the Oxford Ward Meeting house at 3671 South Oldham Street (4180 West). For the Hughes Family-
Ralph's memorial service was perfect! The singing was amazing and the stories about Ralph were wonderful! Everything said regarding Ralph was exactly who he was and is. I have great memories of him helping us out at Girl's Camp. He could not have been a more kind or better example to my family and I. Thank you for sharing him with us!
All of our love and thoughts are with you all right now. Nikki

Dear Vallene and Family,
I want to send my condolences to you on Ralph's passing. What a great guy he is. I truly enjoyed working with him at the phone company. I loved his sense of humor and the way he would tease me when I would give him a phone trouble to check in the central office. He would always tell me "no trouble found" before he had even checked it. I'm glad I got to know him outside of work. He was definitely a light in the life of anyone that knew him. I truly enjoyed serving with you in the temple also. Love to you and your family. I'm sure you'll have great memories of this awesome man.
