Morris "Bud" Powers

Morris "Bud" Powers left this earthly life on August 30, 1999 after a brave battle with cancer. In his final months he was surrounded by loving family and nurtured by his adoring wife, Andrea.

Bud was born in Salt Lake City on July 20, 1930 to James and Arvilla Powers. He grew up in Brigham City and graduated from Box Elder High School. He was an outstanding athlete having played on two state championship football teams. He was named an All-American baseball player in 1946 and was recruited to the St. Louis Cardinal organization in 1947 as a lefty pitcher. He was named Outstanding Baseball Player for Utah, Idaho and Wyoming and started as pitcher at the Esquire All-American baseball game at Wrigley Field, where his coach was Ty Cobb. His high school pitching record was 52-2 (2 forfeits). He was said to have a 90 mph fast ball. He graduated from Utah State (1952) where he was a member of Phi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He was said to be to be unbeatable in ping-pong and gin rummy.He married to Joyce Gunnell in Logan in 1952 and divorced in 1979, but remained close friends and shared in many family occasions. Bud was an outstanding businessman with successful careers at Fram Corporation (Clearfield, UT), Parma (Longmont, CO) and (GSL-Ogden). He enjoyed many activities with his sons including golf, sporting events, hunting and Committed to making memories with his children and grandchildren. fishing trips and was committed to "making memories" with his children and grandchildren, sponsoring many trips with the family. Bud's final years have been a joy with the companionship of his sweetheart and second wife, Andrea. Married in 1991, he and Andrea were inseparable in both sickness and health. They enjoyed many happy experiences traveling the world.

Surviving are: wife, Andrea, sons: Kelly (Sandra), N. Salt Lake; David (Kris), Brigham City; Darin (Susie) Thornton, CO; eight grandchildren; twin sister, Marilyn (Farrell) Jensen and sister-in-law, Margie Powers. Preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Don.

We are honoring his wonderful life with a memorial service on Thursday, September 2, 1999 at 3 p.m., Russon Brothers Bountiful Mortuary, 295 North Main with a visitation one hour prior to services.
