Michael David Maddix passed away on April 4, 2024. He was born to Richard Arthur and Rose Marie Maddix in Salinas, California, on October 24, 1966. As a child, Michael was very loving and caring. He loved working on his car with his dad. Michael was known for his warm and generous personality, always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Michael joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at age 18. From 1986 to 1988, he served a mission in Scotland with "the greatest people on earth". Building memories with and getting to know lifetime friends from the Scotland Edinburgh Mission was a great pillar of strength for him. He continued serving in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life and loved being a Sunday School teacher.

After his mission, he attended BYU, where he met the love of his life Kathryn in 1989. They developed a friendship over several years, and on July 6, 1991, he caught the "biggest catch of his life" when they were married in the Logan Temple.

He was an avid fisherman, gardener, and do-it-yourself expert. He found joy in life's simple pleasures. Recently, he received the honor of "Yard of the Month," which he always aspired to achieve. Michael's talent for cooking brought family and friends together and created happy memories. He loved hosting fun parties that left guests in stitches with his sense of humor. Everyone loved Michael.

Michael enjoyed traveling for work and visited friends and family everywhere. He had a gift for making new friends wherever he would go. He planned the best trips for his sweetheart; their favorite destinations were Scotland, Italy, Monterey, and San Diego. Michael diligently served the deaf and hard of hearing and was passionate about creating accessibility for that community.

Michael is survived by his wife, Kathryn; children, Matthew (Katie) Maddix, Jennifer (Derek) Sorensen, Shannon (Tyler) Coughran, Mitchell Maddix; his three grandchildren, Rosie, Tatum, and Ivy; mother, Rose Marie Maddix; brother, Jeffrey (Cheryl) Maddix, and 19 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Richard Maddix, and brother and sister-in-law, Daniel (Denise) Maddix.

A viewing for Michael will be held on Friday, April 12 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Anderson & Sons Mortuary Lone Peak Chapel located at 6141 W 11000 N Highland, UT 84003. Michael's funeral will be held Saturday, April 13 at 11:00 AM at the church located at 950 N 60 E American Fork, UT 84003. There will be another viewing prior to the service from 9:45-10:45 AM at the same church. Michael will be laid to rest in the Highland City Cemetery. (An ASL interpreter will be provided at the funeral services.)

Michael lit up every room and will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of those touched by his warm spirit.

If you have a memory of Michael to share, please send it to maddixclan@gmail.com.

My condolences to Mike’s family. My memories of Mike are many as we served together on numerous FCC Councils/Committees and Working Groups. Where ever technology for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind was being discussed, Mike was there advocating for access. Mike attended the National Association of State Reläy Administration conferences in order to listen to the State’s viewpoints on relay services. We didn’t agree on all issues but equal access was one we agreed on.

He spoke fondly of his wife and children and was so thrilled when he found out he was going to be a grandfather. Pictures show the joy he had in his heart for family and friends. Rest in Peace, Mike. You will be missed by many.

I was so sorry to learn of Michael’s passing. My sincerest sympathies to all family and friends for his loss. I met Mike years ago as we advocated for access to 9-1-1 for the Deaf and hard of hearing. And we continued to have opportunities through the FCC and the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). He will be greatly missed.
