Born in California July 2 1988, Mia grew up in Salt Lake City and was homeschooled until starting college at age 17, accompanied by her sister Myra. She graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 2009 and worked at COMPanion Corporation with her father and sister. At the time of her death she was Director of Development, leading a team of software engineers, testers, designers, and more (14 people in total). Mia loved documenting processes and procedures and pioneered the company’s internal documentation campaign, ensuring things would continue to run no matter the difficulties.

Mia met Chen in 2010 on a study abroad to Japan, and they were friends for 10 years before becoming a couple. They married September 12 2020 and honeymooned in Arizona.

Mia was a world traveler. Before the travel-apocalypse of 2020, she had visited 26 countries around the globe. She was studying Japanese for fun, and Chinese in anticipation of a visit to China to visit Chen’s extended family.

Mia collected dolls, and she hand made custom doll wigs and accessories for her Etsy store. She knew how to chain-mail, knit, crochet, and more, forever crafting trinkets and bath-bombs and gifts for her family. She also cooked and baked, making food for every family event. She ran a bookclub, and hosted many get-togethers with friends, welcoming everyone into her home with tea and good food. Mia had studied ballet and bellydancing, aikido and iaido, and was learning ballroom dance with Chen.

Mia entered the ICU at Intermountain Hospital on August 17 with a high fever and a heart rate -Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever. -Mahatma Gandhi of 150bpm. Her daughter Yue was born early morning August 18, and Mia seemed to be recovering. August 19 her immune system began to expel blood and she underwent frantic blood transfusion, but survived. Mia stayed in the ICU the next 3 weeks as the numerous nurses and doctors worked hard to preserve her life and aim for recovery. Although Mia regained consciousness and was able to see limited visitors over the next couple weeks, she did not recover, and passed away surrounded by her family.

Mia loved Chinese food, hikes with no uphill, fantasy books, Irish drinking songs without the drinking, classy dresses and fantasy jewelry, festivals and adventure, and her feisty young cat Pasha. She learned as if she would live forever, and she lived every day to its fullest. She had a precious year with her husband, and she was able to hold and nurse her baby.

Mia will be in our hearts forever.
