Matthew Cody was born November 3, 1984 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ric and JoAnn Powell. He was a devoted husband, dog dad, son, brother and uncle.

Matthew attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic School and graduated from Murray High School. After graduation, he took a solo cross country motorcycle trip to Tennessee, which he cherished for the rest of his life. In the summer of 2009, he met the love of his life Heather Joy Smith and on July 16, 2011, they were married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Magna, Utah. Together they enjoyed 12 years of traveling, hiking, fishing, sailing, camping, off roading, shooting and their favorite place to be was Jackson Hole, Wy.

Matthew Cody's most recent employment was with State Fire. He found immense satisfaction due to the opportunity to engage with his customers and continuously acquire new knowledge. His dedication and expertise earned him the utmost respect and trust from his colleagues.

Matthew's connection with his older brother, Eric, was truly remarkable, with the two of them conversing and texting each other daily, strengthening their special relationship. He also enjoyed having Eric’s children over for sleepovers, staying up all night playing Nintendo with Ethan or watching movies with Emma.

Matthew was preceded in death by his brother Nicholas Patrick, his grandparents Ron Powell, Irvin and Stella Mascher, and his father-in-law Kenneth Mitchell Smith. He is survived by his wife, Heather and their faithful dog Zeus, his parents Ric & JoAnn Powell, his favorite brother, Eric(Maria), mother-in-law Linda(Arturo) Moscoso, sister-in-law Holly(Wess) Lancaster. Nieces and nephews, Ethan & Emma Powell, Emery & Lincoln Lancaster, and many, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.

Mass will be held Wednesday, Oct 18, 2023 at 12 noon, followed by a visitation and luncheon at 1:00 pm at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, located at 4914 S. 2200 W. Taylorsville, Utah, 84129

Matthew passed away October 11 from aortic dissection caused from Marfan syndrome. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to marfan.org or a GoFundMe account has been setup at Granite Credit Union under FBO Matthew Cody Powell to help Heather with funeral expenses.

Matthew loved celebrating Christmas Eve with his family. He started a tradition of having a shot(Twisted Shotz), so this Christmas Eve have a twisted shot in memory of Matthew.
