Leola Jean Holman Sipherd

Apr 29, 1931 Jul 19, 2021

Leola Jean Holman Sipherd passed away on July 19, 2021. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, Jean was the third of four children born to Clarence and Charlotte Holman. After graduation from Queen Anne High School in Seattle, Jean attended the University of Washington where she was a rally girl and a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

Jean took a bus to visit her sister Ferol at Brigham Young University during her junior year. Rather than take the long return bus trip, Jean opted to finish her studies there. She graduated from BYU with a degree in Home Economics and a minor in English.

At age 16 Jean met Robert Maurice Sipherd (Bob) at a church dance. Following Bob’s LDS mission, they married in the Manti Temple. Together they raised 6 children. The Air Force took them to Panama City, Florida, and they later lived in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, Moraga, California and Bountiful, Utah. Jean had a strong, creative design sense and was instrumental in designing their homes both in Tacoma as well as in Bountiful.

Jean’s Home Economics degree was put to good use. Her home was always well decorated and welcoming; she constantly tried new recipes for her growing family and took the lead in planning and preparing food for large family gatherings. She was an excellent seamstress and quilter, but her true passions were knitting and reading. She had a love for animals and always had at least two cats and a dog or two that she would feed under the table despite the constant ribbing of family.

Jean is preceded in death by her brothers Clarence Jr and Donald, her husband Bob, as well as her daughter, Christine who passed unexpectedly at the age of 26. She is survived by her sister Ferol White, children Jeanie (Warren) Marquardson, Scott (Karen) Sipherd, Karen (Rob) Duff, Betsy/Elizabeth (Jens) Nielsen, and Diane (Eric) Jergensen. She also leaves behind 19 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Friends and family will gather for a viewing at Larking Mortuary (260 East South Temple) at 10:00am on Saturday, July 24, 2021. A short service at 11:00am at Larkin will be followed by burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of Legacy House in Bountiful for their kindness during Jean’s last days.
