Larry James Hansen
“Big Lar”
November 6, 1972 – May 12, 2025
Larry James Hansen, affectionately known as “Big Lar,” passed away on May 12, 2025, in Salt Lake City, Utah, at the age of 52. Born on November 6, 1972, in Bountiful, Utah, Larry lived a life full of grit, generosity, and laughter.
From a young age, Larry made his presence known—on the football field, the wrestling mat, and anywhere a BMX bike could take him. He was never one to shy away from a little chaos and carried his stories like medals, especially his proudest moment: the fastest wrestling pin at Jordan High School (which he recounted with Al Bundy-level pride).
Following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, Larry earned his master plumbing license and built a respected legacy in the mechanical industry. He co-owned KOH Mechanical alongside his father, supporting not only his family but countless employees and friends throughout the years. His reputation and leadership earned him the presidency of the Utah Mechanical Contractors Association (UMCA). In 2021, with unmatched determination, he branched out to start his own company, Specialty Mechanical Systems, alongside his wife. He was immensely proud of building something from the ground up—on his own terms.
Larry was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back and never think twice. His generosity ran deep, and his heart was as big as his presence. Whether he was fishing, camping, hunting, or just spending time with his family, Larry was always fully in the moment, always giving, always real.
He is survived by his wife Melissa, his daughter Brykel, his son Jaegar, his big kid Casey Jensen. his sister Lisa Ruff (Paul, Megan, McKenzie & Jake ruff) and his father Jim Hansen. He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Margret Carol Hansen.
Larry’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he fiercely loved and loyally supported. He will be missed more than words can express—but never forgotten.
