Kory Welber Newbold, a true hero to so many, passed away at the age of 59, unexpectedly on October 13, 2021 at the University of Utah Hospital. Kory was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on December 24, 1961 to Boyd and Joyce Newbold. He grew up spending time outdoors where he loved to be. He married Lori Kay North on May 21st, 1988 and they had 3 beautiful daughters. He was an amazing father to his children. He always put them first before everything. When Kory wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending his time fishing, hunting, camping, and playing his guitars. He had a secret talent of singing that not many people got to experience.
He became an officer at the West Valley City Police department in 1986 where he spent most of his career until he retired as a Lieutenant. During his time with WVPD he graduated from the FBI academy in 2009. In 2014 he was hired on with the University of Utah Police Department where he spent the remainder of his career. Kory was a decorated officer with 2 medals of valor.
Kory had a heart as big as the world. He was a beloved son, brother, father and grandfather. He is survived by his father Boyd Newbold, sister Vicki Buttars (Clint), his daughters Whitney (Krizten) Newbold, Brandy (Tyson) Black, and Tiffany (Cristian) Rojas. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Thurston, Deegan, Caden, Waylon and one on the way. He is preceded in death by his mother Joyce Hardee Newbold and his siblings Mark, Krissie, and Shellie. Our hearts are broken you are gone. I know you and Grandma are together again, forever watching over us. I will never forget how much I appreciated all the love and care you gave to your mom/my best friend.
I always loved hearing your stories about the undercover SWAT team days and was left in awe of your unwavering bravery. Thank you for your commitment to protect us, you are our biggest hero. I know you will be forever protecting your girls.
You will be missed dearly!
