Gary Frederick Newland

Jan 7, 1945 Jun 27, 2026

Our dear father, brother, grandfather, uncle and friend, Gary Frederick Newland, passed away peacefully on June 27th, 2026.

Gary was born in Altadena, California, on January 7th, 1945, but was raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised by his mother and grandmother, who both doted on him all throughout his youth and he loved them dearly. Gary and his younger brother, Dayle, would often take advantage of the numerous opportunities they received to engage in what some would call, sheer tomfoolerish doohickory, much of which, for the sake of his brother and himself, (may his dear mother and Nanny have mercy), will not be disclosed here.

Down the road to his high school graduation in 1962, Gary often tinkered with various items, but especially classic muscle cars, his truck and motorcycles. He also started work at OEM Automatic Transmission Parts.

While there, it became apparent that Gary knew more than his fair share about transmissions, which led the company owner to reach out to him about running his own branch of the company in Salt Lake City, which Gary did until he suffered a severe central brain aneurysm at the age of 27.

While Gary was in a coma for several months, the company owner with OEM reached out to Gary's then wife, Nancy, to continue the work in Gary's stead, which allowed her to still survive off of the paychecks Gary would normally have received.

During this trying period, the doctors caring for Gary were uncertain of his survival, and were convinced that if he did live through the ordeal, Gary would or could be severely mentally and/or physically handicapped for the rest of his life. Despite all the odds, however, and by what can only be the grace of God, (and perhaps just to prove them all wrong), Gary miraculously regained consciousness and recovered.

The full process of his recovery was very slow and took many months of training to get him back on his own two feet. Eventually, however, he was able to return to work, where, after many dedicated years and OEM pulled out of Utah, Gary and his business partner took over the former Utah branch and began their own transmission business, Central Valley Transmissions, which they ran until Gary's retirement.

At age 32, five years after his aneurysm, Gary became the father to his first and only child, Tammy. Gary was always someone Tammy looked up to. She has always admired his vast intelligence and knowledge of so many things, his deep respect for his country and the men and women who fought for our freedom, his ability to fix almost anything, his beautiful talent for woodwork, and his fun, often mischievous sense of humor.

She often recalls his “Hearty Handshakes”, numerous movie quotes, and his extensive knowledge of World War II, though one of her fondest memories was watching her father tenderly cradle his then-newborn and very premature grandson in his arms, as if he were the most fragile thing on this Earth.

All in all, Gary lived a full, rich, and humor-filled life. Now, at the end of his mortal sojourn he will be reunited with his beloved Nanny and mother. His journey was a good one, and to send him off, a special message: Dad, your “Sweet Pea” loves you! He is survived by his daughter, (Tammy Bauer), son-in-law, (Paul Bauer), grandson, (Elder Grayson McQuiston), brother, (Dayle “Dagle” Sinclair), and niece, (Julie Sinclair).

Till we meet again Gary, we love you so much, we will miss you and the beautiful gift of your humor - thank you for the laughs! Here’s to you Daddy! "There's nothin' wrong with me!" (One of his favorite movie quotes.)

The family would like to thank the staff of Riverway Assisted Living and Memory Care, Mobile Medical and Atlas Homecare and Hospice for their incredible love, respect, service and kindness to Dad and the family.

A casual graveside service will be held on Friday, July 17th, 2026 at the Murray City Cemetery, 5490 S Vine St, Murray, UT 84107, at 10:00 am, to share memories of Gary and to laugh. A family and friend lunch will be provided afterward.
