As a Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, and friend, Frieda Alpha Underwood Gines went peacefully in her sleep while dreaming about catching catfish, on November 10, 2022. She was 97 years old.

Frieda was born in a small Missouri town, on April 26, 1925. She lived through The Great Depression as the daughter of a hard-working tenant farmer who had come from a family poor in finances but rich in history and heritage. Her Underwood Grandparents both had Native American ancestors, and her Great Grandfather on the Underwood side died in 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson while serving as a soldier in The First Tennessee Infantry of the Union Army in The American Civil War. Her father was one of six children in a family that literally survived by living off the land in a remote mountain area of Pulaski County Missouri.

Following in the tradition of her family’s humble beginnings, Frieda raised three sons of a largely self-subsistent farm in what is now West Valley City, Utah. Neighbors were sparse in those early years, and work on the farm was abundant, incessant, and hard. Frieda pitched in to make a life for her sons, including gathering eggs, planting a garden, bottling vegetables and fruit, churning butter and cream from a daily bucket of milk, and harvesting pigs, chickens, and beef for meat.

In the second chapter of her life, Frieda traveled extensively, living for extended periods of time in Hawaii, India, and Pakistan as her husband worked for an international construction company building powerplants throughout the world.

On April 22, 2008, she married Nolen A. Gines. He was her “Honey” and her “Sweetheart.” After Nolen, Frieda’s passion was RV’s, camping, and fishing. Nolen opened her world and made all of these things possible. He drove the RV’s, baited her hook, and fileted her fish. He cared for her and adored her. He brought the happiness of the world to her final days. Most importantly, he simply loved her; with all his heart.

Frieda is survived by her husband, Nolen A. Gines, sons Gary (Susan) Whitney of Gig Harbor, Washington, daughter-in-law Carla (wife of son Dale deceased), Whitney of Tucson, Arizona, Ray (Toni) Whitney of Sandy, Utah, step-daughters Sherlyn (Mike) Coulter of West Valley City, Utah, Cheryl Whitaker of West Valley City, Utah, Penny (Bryan) Slack of West Jordan, Utah, and step-sons Bob (Sue) Gines of Mount Emmons, Utah and Rick Gines of West Valley City, Utah. She is further survived by nephew Bruce Belgum, niece Lynda Pollman, six grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, thirteen step-grandchildren, and 24 great step-grandchildren. All of these she loved and touched deeply.

Frieda is preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Ruterbories (2018), and Helen Kightly (1998), a son Dale Whitney (2018), a grandson Jesse Whitney (2021), and a step-grandson Josh Gines (2020).

A viewing will be held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary and Cemetery 3115 East 7800 South (Bengal Blvd), Cottonwood Heights, Utah. Interment will immediately follow at approximately 1:00 PM at Strawberry Cemetery located at West Highway 40 in Duchesne, Utah.
