Franklin Ray Huff Jr., known affectionately as Ray or Papa by his loved ones, passed away in St. George UT on August 18, 2024, at the age of 66. He had been struggling with Diabetes for the last 10+ years, resulting in complete blindness and ultimately kidney failure. Born on January 15, 1958, in Murray, Utah, to Franklin Ray Huff Sr. and the late Barbara Johnson Walters.
Ray grew up in Murray as the eldest brother to David, Julie, Jennifer, and John. He studied art at the University of Utah on two full ride scholarships one for art and the other for golf. Laying the groundwork for what would become his passionate career as an artist.
While attending University, Ray married the love of his life, Jean Russell Huff, and together they raised five children: Stephen, Kristie (Uriah), Shawn (Emily), Jamie (John) and Andrew. Ray’s life was filled with the joy of nine grandchildren: Lily, Austin, Luxe, Jaxon, Kaylee, Dean, Krue, Gemma, and Mick.
Frank Huff (his professional alias) was an accomplished landscape artist. He had achieved many awards through his art profession, selected as one of Utah’s top 100 artists for the prior 150 years, The Governor's Award for Outstanding artist 2020, also featured in Utah Profile as one of Utah’s Premiere Artists.
A story Ray felt summarized his career;
”Walking into a Fine Art galley with some of his latest paintings. Ray anxiously awaits as the curator examines the canvas only to come back and reject his artwork. Telling him his art ability is just not quite there yet. BUT, noticing the similar styling, the curator shows Ray some other paintings. Hoping to encourage him, the curator points out that if only Ray could paint a bit more like this particular artist they would be able to sell every one of his paintings. Ray chuckled to himself and asked the curator “Do you know who painted those?” the curator did not “I did” smirked Ray.”
Though it was not always smooth sailing for Ray in his life he did what he loved. His artwork has touched many people, and his caring and charismatic personality will always be remembered.
Ray’s love for life was unmatched. When opportunity came his way he took a hold of it with or without a plan. Ray spent much time on road trips to find the landscapes to study for his paintings, always jamming out to music and drinking a coke. When possible his wife and children would also accompany him, resulting in memorable stories that he loved to reminisce about. Ray also loved to play golf, so much so that even when he could physically no longer play himself he would accompany his father, children and grandchildren on the course, instilling in them his legendary skills and love for the game. He cherished time spent with his grandchildren, especially playing barbies and teaching them how to paint and sketch.
Franklin Ray Huff will be deeply missed, but his Legacy will continue to amaze and inspire. His life was well lived. Survived by his wife, children, his adored grandchildren, and numerous friends who will continue to walk through life with the same positive outlook.
