On October 25, 2026, Eldon Black peacefully passed away at the age of 92. His family though heartbroken, felt peace knowing that after eight long years, Eldon has joyously reunited with his sweet eternal companion, Charlene.
Eldon was born in 1933 in Short Creek, Arizona, and as the oldest boy was responsible from a young age. As a teenager, he worked at a sawmill in House Rock Valley and on Kaibab Mountain skidding logs. He served in the US Army from 1955 to 1957, stationed primarily in Italy where he repaired and maintained mobile guided missile systems. During this time he sent the maximum amount of money the military would allow home to his family—making all the difference in the world to his parents and numerous siblings. In the Army, he first tried malts, which were a treat he enjoyed for the rest of his life.
A few years after returning home from the military, he was injured while working in a machine shop in Tooele, Utah. While recovering, he stayed with his mother in St. George and laid the cinderblock for an additional room on her house. During this time, he met Charlene Richter, who was working in St. George to earn money for school. Their love story was immediate and lifelong. They married in 1965 and were deeply in love throughout 52 years of marriage.
Eldon had a widespread reputation as being hardworking, dependable, honest, and always willing to help anyone. He never gave offense and never took offense.
He worked for many years at Interstate Rock in Hurricane, Utah as a heavy equipment mechanic and shop foreman. He had a gift for solving difficult mechanical problems, often improvising unexpected solutions and creating new parts from scratch. He was critically injured at work in 1988. He was not expected to survive—however, due to miracles too numerous to count, and the loving steadfast care of his wife, he enjoyed 38 more years with his family.
He is survived by his two sons, Eldon and his wife Heather, Del and his wife Michelle, and their three children Nathan, Allie, and Hailey. He is also survived by seven brothers and six sisters. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife, one daughter, and ten siblings.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and a man of immense charity and quiet love for all around him.
