Egill Simonsen

August 25, 1929 — January 22, 2024

Egill Haug Simonsen passed away, peacefully in his sleep, on January 22, 2024.

He was born on August 25, 1929 to Leif Johan Simonsen and Klara Marie Pedersen, one of four children, in Bergen, Norway. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1951 and served a mission in Norway before immigrating to the United States in 1955.

He married his sweetheart, Gunhild Brunsvik Simonsen on May 10, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. Egill and Gunhild are the parents of 9 children, seven sons and two daughters.

Egill had a love for the outdoors including hiking, backpacking, and river rafting. He had a dedication to Boy Scouts and served as a scout master for many years. He worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Genealogy department for the Scandinavian lines. He was very valuable in this field because of his knowledge of the Old Norse language. He helped many people to find their ancestors’ names including extensive work on his wife’s family tree. His enthusiasm for family history throughout his life leads us to believe that there were many spirits waiting to greet and thank him for the work he completed on their behalf while here on earth.

He was preceded in death by Leif (Father), Klara (Mother), Gunhild (Wife), Jan (Brother), Kaare (Brother), Ben (Erna) (Son), Tom (Son), Finn (Son), and Erik (Grandson). He is survived by his sister Britt, his children Fred (Jan), Boyd, Raymond (Claudine), Reuben (Heather), Lilah, Julie (Tony), 28 grandchildren, and 25 great grandchildren.

His children’s joys were his joys, their sorrows his sorrows.

Visitation will be held on Friday, January 26, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm at Lindquist’s Bountiful Mortuary, 727 North 400 East, Bountiful, UT 84010. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the LDS Church, 331 South 50 West, Kaysville, UT 84037 with visitation prior to services from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Interment will follow at about 1:00pm at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery 1640 Lakeview Dr., Bountiful, UT 84010.
