Dwight “Bud” DeForest

1950-2023

Dwight Francis DeForest, better known as “Bud,” passed away peacefully at home in Murray, Utah on July 26, 2023, after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by family, friends, his favorite dog, Gus, and the “dumb dog” he tolerated, Gracie. Bud was born on November 25, 1950, in Salt Lake City to Francis Leroy DeForest and Beverly Jean Hepting. He married the first love of his life, Raylene Hermansen, on August 28, 1970, and together they raised four children.

Life threw a curveball at Bud in 1999, when Raylene passed away suddenly. Thankfully, he met the second love of his life, Carrie Blackburn. They were married in a “Goofy” Disneyland wedding on April 20, 2002. Bud spent the rest of his days loving Carrie and all the new members of his family with all his heart. Carrie gracefully cared for Bud throughout his struggle with cancer.

Bud retired as a truck driver for FedEx Freight, where he built many lasting friendships. He was a perpetual winner in Utah’s Truck Driving Championships, where he earned a state championship, finished second nationally, and regularly qualified for the national competition. Bud was a baseball coach for his boys, an avid supporter of Jamie’s dance competitions, and a lover of all things related to trains.

Bud is survived by his wife, Carrie; his children, Shane (Lesia), Shawn (Rachel), Jamie (Brad) Rowberry, Jason (Julie), Beckie (Dan) Carrigan, Rachel (Shawn) Blackburn, Erik (McKell) Walters, and Jeremy Walters; his 5 siblings; 19 grandchildren; and his dogs. Bud is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Raylene, and two granddaughters.

A celebration of life will be held in Bud’s honor on Saturday, August 5, 2023, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at Glenmoor Golf Club, 9800 South 4800 West, South Jordan, Utah 84009. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to assist with medical expenses. Donations can be made via Venmo @Jamie-Rowberry1

Sorry for the loss. Bud was awesome behind a 18 wheeler, the best memory of Bud, was he and my dad building a 250 atc before the major 3 came out with one. That thing was FAST!! We (as kids) weren't allowed to ride it. Many other great memories. Sad day.

Bud was very big part of my life growing up. Raylene babysat my twin and I, he worked with my dad at FedEx. Bud taught me a lot of things in life. He was like a second dad to me, even at 41 years old he was still there. I will miss you tremendously Bud. Thank you for being such an amazing part of my life.

Love,

Brandi

My heart hurts for everyone who knew and loved Bud, he was a large part of my childhood. I haven’t seen him in quite a hole but can still hear his laugh. Bud I know you’ll be missed by all.

Bud was my driver trainer when I hired on at Viking freight. We worked together at the Freeport center and would go to lunch everyday. I greatly respected my good friend Bud. We always helped out one another, and had a good time teasing other drivers and people we would come in contact with. I'll miss Bud , he was a great guy. And a good friend. May God bless your family with comfort and peace. Love Bob

Bud was my oldest brother. Always the roughest , toughest kid on the block. Never took no for an answer and always stood up for what was right. He was fun, adventurous, kinda crazy, and willing to get things done. Bud and my big sister, Lynda always made sure we were taken care of. We didn’t have a lot growing up but what we did have was love. We knew that we could count each other and when things were tough we made it through together. Bud was always the leader, first one on the ball field, first one under the hood of the car, and when we had tomato fights with old lady Thompson, Bud was the first one to throw a tomato. That’s a story of a cranky old woman and a bunch of unruly kids. We had good times and we had bad times but Bud was always there to show us how to get up and deal with it. When I ran away at 15, he tracked me down and brought food and money to me. When I refused to go to school he moved me in with him and his new bride, Raylene so I could go to school with her. He was my first husbands best friend, we camped, we partied and our kids grew up together. I’ll love him forever and I know he is safe and I will see him again.

I only knew Bud from work, but met him early in my career and felt an immediate bond with him. He was generous, outgoing, always willing to come in early and do what he could to help out. I will always remember how he was not only one you could count on, but also a very nice individual. I am glad I got the opportunity to have met him in my lifetime. RIP Bud.
