April 12, 1940 was the date of my birth. My life started in a one-room home in Hayden, Utah. I was born in the same home where my mother was born. I feel I have endured much more than I should have, but I have also enjoyed much more than most. Thankfully, I was able to be born to a beautiful mother, Ora Bastian and a very loving and compassionate father, Floyd W Labrum. The most enjoyable time of my life, without question, has been my marriage to my beautiful wife, Janet Mary Smith. We were married in the Salt Lake Temple, September 19, 1963 by Apostle Richard L. Evans.
The home of my youth was in Roosevelt, Utah. I was raised in an area called the FLATS. Of course, there was a reason for the name. But, in my youth this was a perfect place for my childhood. In the Flats, I went camping, fishing, hunting, and learned that life is to live.
Unfortunately, my mom didn't bless our family with any sisters. My two brothers, however, were the best brothers I could ask for. No one could ever wish to have more kind and loving brothers than my brothers Randall (Randy) Craig Labrum and Ivan Clark Labrum.
1958 was a pivotal year in my life. It was the last year that I spent at home except for the summer of 1959. I graduated from Union High and left home for Dixie College. It was there that I met Janet at church in St. George. After graduating from Dixie College in 1960, I began my 2 ½ year mission to Denmark. It was in my mission that I truly gained my testimony of the truthfulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I know that God has a sense of humor as only the Lord could tolerate the youth of the church to take the gospel to all the world. I love the hard-hearted Danes. They are truly a wonderful people.
After arriving home in March of 1963, and in order to avoid the military draft, I enrolled at BYU. Most importantly, I began my eternal quest to make Janet my wife. Thankfully I was successful!
The church has always been a big part of my life. I have served in three bishoprics. I was on the high council. I was Sunday School President and served as instructors. My favorite church calling, however, was serving together with Janet as the Pine Valley activities director. We brought comradery to Pine Valley by providing events that would bring the 'full timers' and the 'part-timers' together. I served in this calling for two years.
Janet and I moved back to St. George in 1969 and I started my own insurance agency. During the many years of providing protection to many wonderful people in Southern Utah, I was able to become very close friends with my clients. I truly feel this was the highlight of my career.
Politics has not appealed to me sufficiently enough to attempt to try for public office. However, I do believe that everyone should help publicly in some way. My service was as Chairman of the Board of Adjustments for Bountiful, Utah for one year. I then served as Chairman of the Board of Adjustments for St. George City for 3 years and ended my public service as a member of the Bloomington Board for 4 years. Notably the banners on the light poles found around St. George were as a result of my endeavors and my design. Another endeavor I enjoyed was being part of the Huntsman World Senior Games for the past 35 years. Although I never competed, I was one of the original founders and board members of the games and I ended my tenure as the President of the Board.
Truly, I get the most enjoyment when traveling with my sweet wife. We have visited many countries and have been privileged to be able to return to Janet's motherland, England, several times and to become reacquainted with her relatives there.
Our children are and have always been a great blessing to us. The love received from them, and their families is without description. They all have successful marriages, successful careers and lovely children. The most pride a father can have is to witness his children's testimonies in Christ and the restored church. I'm very proud of that. The message that I want to share, is the message of the love of Christ. The message of His forgiveness. As a parent, and with all my love, I want to share this message with all those that I love and all those that I have not been able to be with. We will all meet again and be together as a family.
Love Dad
