Dorothy Switzer

Nov 6, 1923 Mar 31, 2026

At the remarkable age of 102, our beloved matriarch finally hung up her boots and rode off into the sunset. Dorothy was born November 6, 1923, in Springville, Utah. Her idyllic childhood was spent playing in the family garden, exploring the fields and ditches around town, and climbing all over the mountains she loves so much. Whatever her older brother Bob did, she wanted to do also.

In school, she played the drums for the marching band, participated in school plays, and developed her painting skills, which became a lifelong pursuit. She went on to work at Geneva Steel, then attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City, and eventually joined the Women's Army Corps (WAC) during WWII where she met her future husband, Paul Switzer.

Dorothy and Paul spent several years moving between Utah, Indiana and Arizona early in their marriage. Dorothy was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and devoted her time and energy to raising her children in the gospel. With them, she enjoyed church activities such as Road Shows, Speech Festivals, church bazaars, and ward dinners.

She made clothes on a treadle sewing machine; made the best peanut brittle, divinity and fudge; could stretch a dollar farther than anyone else; and to this day can tell you how to 'fix' a live chicken for dinner. At 74, she even rode the Sky Coaster at Lagoon.

Her testimony and faith in God has remained "As Firm As the Mountains Around Us" throughout her life. This testimony led her to serve a proselyting mission at the age of 74 in San Antonio, Texas. Through her devotion, she instilled her values into her children and consequently the following generations. She loved her family, always and forever, no matter what.

She is preceded in death by her parents, George Lufkin Barron and Ada Naomi Maughan; her older brother, Robert Maughan Barron; and her husband Paul Mitchell Switzer. She leaves behind her children, John (Janice), Cathy (Alan Bentley) and Becky (Morris McDonald); 14 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday, April 10th at 10am at the Logan Cemetery, with Military Funeral Honors.

Arrangements are made under the direction of Spilsbury Mortuary, 110 South Bluff Street, St. George, Utah. 435-673-2454.
