Derrick had a zest for life and left no stone, hill, or mountain untouched. He had adventure through & through. Even if there was that pang in his gut, he did it anyway. His journey took him in many directions like meeting lifelong friends, the beautiful outdoors, and maybe places he should’ve been. That would be Derrick and sharing those experiences with all of us. Along with the outdoors, his talent for photography was beyond impressive. He didn’t have professional equipment, just his cell phone.

He loved watching ALL sports, but the Forty Niners was his team. He would yell & scream throughout the entire game, win or lose. A true fan. He loved all music. Didn’t matter what and sometimes it was a bit much for mom. He loved attending concerts as much as music. Derrick’s favorite place was Moab and everything that Moab offered. He spent a lot of time exploring and discovery new trails, waterways, and creatures. He also enjoyed the ocean in Texas, Seattle, and California.

Derrick had a loving heart and a kindness about him. He cared deeply for others, even when things got rough. He is his own person and individual and made his own choices in life, not always the best, but who always does. Life is a challenge, and we make it what it is. Enjoy the day.

He is survived by his parents Cheryl & Randy, siblings Sheena Whetsel (Adam) & Matthew Garrett (Alicia), Great-Grandma Carol Bass. Numerous aunts & uncles, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his father Gordon Cole, Grandparents Mike & Josephine Kinsman & Jack & Rose Garrett, and great grandfather Rex Bass.
