David Dale Astin Jr.

On December 22, 2020, David Dale Astin Jr. left this world and went back to be with his wife, Elisabeth Rosa Schilling, whom he had been missing for 7 years. Though we will miss him, we are happy that he is back with his sweetheart.

David was born on March 13, 1932 to David Dale Astin and Helen Elizabeth Norberg in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ or Latter-Day Saints and always strongly believed in its principles and covenants.

On December 30, 1952, he married his sweetheart Elizabeth in the Salt Lake temple which was opened especially for them because he was entering the service right after. It was a very special day for both of them.

Elisabeth (known to those who loved her as Betty) went with him to Washington for basic training but returned to Utah when he was deployed to Korea. While in Korea, he served in leadership positions in the church and was able to help other servicemen have contact with the church. He always regretted that he did not get to serve a mission for the Church, but those who knew what he did in Korea know that he did serve a mission, just not like one normally does.

In late October of 1953, he was rushed home to be with Betty at the birth of their first child because it was believed that Betty would not survive the birth. Helen Rose Astin was born on October 24, 1953 and Betty recovered nicely. David finished out his term of service in Utah.

Betty later gave birth to Linda Marie Astin in 1955 and Shirley Jean Astin in 1957. David took his responsibilities as a father very seriously. In fact, all who knew him knows that he put his family first.

David loved boating and waterskiing with his family and friends. He also loved to explore places and go camping with his family. He loved to bake and created many recipes. He also loved music and had a beautiful voice. He sang in a barbershop quartet for special occasions associated with the Days of ’47 celebrations and at talent shows.

He has served in many callings in the Church, but spent most of his adult life as either a Clerk or an Executive Secretary. For the last 30 years or so, he was also highly involved with the extraction program of the church (later renamed Indexing) and trained many people in how to find their ancestors and to prepare the forms needed so that their work could be done in the temple.

David loved being a grandfather and he doted on his grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and one very loved great, great-granddaughter. They always knew that their grandpa, or great grandpa, loved them.

David is joining his wife, Elisabeth; his daughter, Helen; his parents, David and Helen; one grandson; one great grandchild; and one son-in-law. He is survived by his sisters, Diane and Jane; his brothers, Gene and Dennis; his daughters, Linda and Shirley; his son-in-law, Ron; 22 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

David will be missed by all those who knew him. A service to celebrate his life will be held at the LDS church building at 2925 East Bengal Blvd. in Cottonwood Heights, UT at 1:00 PM on January 8, 2021 with a viewing before starting at 11:00 AM. All are welcome, but please take Covid-19 precautions and wear your masks. It will also be available through Zoom. Please see instructions below.
