Darlene Marie Senter Benson

1924 – 2020 (95 years young)

Our beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Wife, Sister, and Friend passed away peacefully in Salt Lake City, Utah on July 23, 2020 of COVID.

Darlene was born August 27, 1924 in Pullman, Washington to loving parents, Guy Ned Senter and LaVina Ida Senecal.

She is the cherished mother of Gary Lee Benson (deceased), Ronald Phillip Benson (Linda, deceased), Robert Karl Benson (Claudia), Sharon Marie Peterson (Reginald), and Linda Darlene Humes (Ray). She was the proud and loving grandmother of 20; great-grandmother of 59; and great-great-grandmother of 3.

Darlene grew up in Pullman, Washington and attended one year at Washington State College where she met and fell in love with a young Air Force Cadet. She and Simon were married in Parowan, UT in 1943, moving every 9 weeks in the first year of marriage, finally settling and making their forever home in Provo, UT in 1954. They were sealed with their 5 children in the St. George Temple in 1962. Darlene was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was a faithful member serving in many positions, much of the time in the primary organization.

She deeply loved her family, had a strong testimony of the Church and was an excellent example of faith and service to others. She was an excellent cook, gardener, PBR, PRCA, and Utah Jazz fan, and an avid genealogist. She worked for Provo School District Food Services for 21 years, retiring in 1989 and then worked for Hickory Farms for 7 more years before retiring for the final time. Her favorite “job” however, was being the best friend and respite care provider for her disabled grandson, BJ. They spent many, many hours together and will be eternal rodeo & Jazz buddies.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 5 siblings, her oldest son (Gary), daughter-in-law (Linda), and her husband, Simon Karl Benson.

The family would like to express our love and appreciation to those who helped us care for our mother during her final year; Kerry Karr, RN; Nancy, Kayla, Simon, Ashlin, Tom, Chad, and so many more (Personal Care Assistants), as well as Tammy Nixon, Memory Care Director and all of the nurses at City Creek Post Acute. If we have forgotten anyone, we apologize – Mom loved everyone, and she was loved by so many!
