In Loving Memory
Brent Barney
On November 3rd, 2023, at the age of 72, Brent Barney peacefully concluded his journey, succumbing to
the challenges posed by Lewy Body Dementia. Born on November 24, 1950, to Freeland Barney and Dorothy Barney, Brent’s legacy is marked by a life of dedication and love.
In 1984, Brent earned his Master’s in CPA from the University of Utah, setting the stage for a remarkable career. His impactful leadership roles at the Utah State Tax Commission and as Chief Petty Officer (CPO) in the Navy Reserves reflect his unwavering commitment and diligent work ethic. Brent also spent 16 years working at Kennecott Copper, where his father and two sisters worked as employees.
Brent’s devotion extended beyond his professional achievements; he was a caring father, grandfather, and husband, mirroring the same dedication to his family that defined all aspects of his life.
Driven by a vision of early retirement and a zest for life, Brent tirelessly pursued his dreams. His passion for running, biking, and swimming became a defining feature of his character. A true enthusiast, Brent
completed 41 marathons, over one hundred-half marathons, and the Ironman in Cozumel, Mexico in 2013, showcasing his healthy obsession with these activities. His infectious enthusiasm drew many close to him into the world of running, trail running, biking, or swimming.
Despite the challenges posed by Lewy Body Dementia, Brent’s resilience remained undiminished. He continued pedaling his bike and ran nearly every day until the very end, a testament to his remarkable determination. His ability to push his mind and body beyond perceived limits was extraordinary,
matched only by his love for life and fondness for cracking jokes whenever possible.

I will always remember what a caring person Brent was. It was a joy working for him. He made changes in the Processing Division at the Utah State Tax Commission, that helped our efficiency. I am glad he retired when he did so he could do what he loved to do. I know he loved the outdoors and his sports. He was a good Man!!!
I had the pleasure of working with Brent for many years at the Utah State Tax Commission. Great guy. Saw him out running many times as well as chatted in the fitness centre at work. My condolences to his family.

Brent was a good friend, growing up across the street, we had lots of fun and good times. BTW, Brent doesn’t look much older, other than a few crows feet and gray hair! My sincere condolences to Brent’s family. R.I.P. old friend. Carl & Karen Justesen
