West Jordan, Utah –

Amalia Sofia Zelaya, 87 years old, peacefully passed away surrounded by loved ones on April 19, 2022. She was born January 12, 1935 in Lolotique, El Salvador to Tomas de Jesus Romero and Josefa Jurado.

She married Inez Zelaya Flores on June 14, 1974. They had 6 children whom they loved dearly:

Inez Zelaya (Bertha), Raul Zelaya (Roxana), Tomasa Maldonado (Arturo), Daysi Ortiz (Luis), Maria de Jesus Zelaya and Ana Sofia Zelaya-Mendez (Tomas).

She was better known by her grandchildren as Guely and to everyone else as Niña Sofi.

She was extraordinary, very business savvy, she enjoyed crocheting, camping, her chihuahuas, and birds. She had many pets in her lifetime. She had a passion for gardening, she loved plants and flowers and had the best green thumb in the family. But above all, her family was her greatest passion.

We loved teasing her for the amount of salt she added to all of her meals, there was never enough salt for her. She shared every meal with her full figured chihuahuas, which were her babies and companions. She loved good action movies and old westerns. She loved making tamales from scratch and everyone enjoyed them and asked her to make them for every holiday.

She became a member of the LDS church and had a strong testimony and faith in the Lord. She loved to read the Book of Mormon along with the Bible and always encouraged her family to do the same.

She was an incredible woman who overcame many challenges and accomplished so much in her lifetime. She pursued the American Dream by moving to the United States, becoming a US citizen, and had a strong work ethic which she instilled in her children and grandchildren.

She will be missed dearly and remembered for someone that was always willing to give a helping hand. She opened her home to anyone that needed a place to stay, and she provided financial support if you were in need of funds. She was always willing to help in any way she possibly could. She gave the best advice and told the best stories.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Daysi and Ana Sofia along with her sons, Inez and Raul, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Inez Zelaya Flores, daughters Maria de Jesus and Tomasa Maldonado.
