Alfred Robert Matern, age 98, passed away peacefully in his home, on December 25, 2021.

He was born on May 28, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Robert Walter Matern and Lillieth Amanda Hokanson Matern. He married his sweetheart, Shirley Jane Bailey Matern, on April 24, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 15, 1961.

Bob graduated from South High School and the University of Utah. He worked as a Chemist in the cement industry. He was a WWII Army Veteran. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Bob loved cooking, fishing, learning Spanish, investing in the stock market, and spending time with his family and friends.

Bob is survived by his son Richard (Carla), daughter-in-law Suzanne, 8 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, brother Gordan (Helen), and sister-in-law Mary Todd.

He was preceded in death by his wife Shirley, son David, parents, and siblings Evelyn, Eugene, and Leland.

The family wishes to thank all who helped care for Bob.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 11 AM, at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary and Cemetery located at 3115 East 7800 South, Cottonwood Heights, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service at 10 AM. Internment will take place immediately following the service at Memorial Mountain View Mortuary and Cemetery.
