About Us

Over 100 years ago, Issei Pioneer, Soji Fukui immigrated from Hiroshima, Japan to the sugarcane fields of Kona, Hawaii. Realizing this was not his calling, young Soji temporarily left his family behind and traveled to the mainland to provide a better opportunity for their future. Originally a privately owned funeral home, Soji was hired as a funeral director to help with the culture and customs of the large Japanese population residing around the Boyle Heights area. After assuming ownership in 1918, Fukui Mortuary has been one of the significant institutions of the Japanese American community. Since our founding by Soji Fukui in 1918, countless families from all across Southern California have experienced the caring, respect and personal attention that are uniquely Japanese, uniquely Fukui. Ours is a heritage of old and new traditions, of rich cultural ties that span continents, and of loving memories that connect one family generation to the next. Now that we embark on our 5th generation, we promise to uphold the legacy that was instilled in us by our Issei Pioneer, Soji Fukui.
